Over 60,000 injuries at work show progress still has to be made in UK

Construction remains the most dangerous profession for potential death according to figures produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Whilst most people thankfully go to work without fear of injury or worse, 135 people in the UK tragically died doing their job in 2022/23, the latest period for which there are figures available.

Agriculture, forestry and fishing, and manufacturing are all potentially dangerous industries included in this figure.

Of the 61,713 injuries reported by employers slips, trips and falls on the same level was the biggest cause, accounting for 30 per cent of the total. Handling, lifting and carrying incidents were 18 per cent, whilst being hit by a moving object accounted for 11 per cent.

Falls from a height at 8 per cent and the same percentage involving acts of violence, makes up the main causes reported by the HSE.

Of course, during the coronavirus, where most people were at home, reported incidents went down, but the latest figures are now a little worse than what they were prior to the pandemic.

It’s also a strong barometer of the issue in that in 2022/23 an estimated 35.2 million working days were lost due to work-related illness and non-fatal injuries in Great Britain.

Also 3.7 million days were lost to workplace personal injury, which is the equivalent to 1.31 working days per worker over the year.
